EXHIBITION

"Kolibri" proposes
the art and photography

to confront the most intimate part of the being.

Kolibri, the exhibition, is a therapeutic artistic work that confronts existence and the loss of meaning. The message is "No matter what you expect from life, it is simpler to give what life expects from you." Victor Frankl did it in Austria and left us with logotherapy. Frida Kahlo did it in Mexico and left us with great works of art. Both created from the vulnerability of pain, fear, oppression, and injustice.

For logotherapists, psychological problems arise when there is a lack of strength in the spiritual dimension that results in a lack of meaning in life. The "Will to Meaning" is what drives you forward in life. But how can one find this meaning? - Well, according to Víctor Frankl, an Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist, and philosopher, there are three ways: creation, transcendent emotional experience, and attitude towards suffering.

That's why Kolibri, the exhibition, shows you the result of "Creation" and the strengthening of the spiritual dimension as a meaningful path in life. The exhibition presents the case of a businesswoman from Tyrol (in Austria) who decided to give art to life, despite the conditions she had to overcome to find happiness. She channeled her suffering into creating pieces of woodwork,  and other forms of art that are displayed to the public in this exhibition.

In a practical exercise of therapeutic photography, I join as a photographer to document her work. It is during the process of photographic production that I realize how my photographs, which portray her emotions, are also reflecting my own feelings: pain, existential emptiness, fear, and uncertainty. That's why the images question, "Who am I now? What do I want? Where am I heading?" and the reflection on these questions is my contribution to this work made for sharing.

"One is never farther away than from oneself."

I was going through a grieving process. In that year, I lost a total of nine close family members and friends. The deaths were tragic: cancer, COVID, femicide, and kidnapping. I believe that until then, I was not aware of the mourning and the "migrant self." I hadn't realized that I was further away from myself than from my own country, with family and friends suffering.

Then I began to somatize; I lost my hair and rapidly developed vitiligo. I didn't have time to process it. I simply wrapped myself in my own suffering and even gave it a name, "The famous midlife crisis." In my emotional instability, I wanted to return to Mexico, but the insecurity prevailing in my country, the deaths caused by that reason, and my own threat experienced during my time as a journalist prevented me from doing so. Thus, I experienced fear of going back and existential emptiness for staying in a country completely different from my own.

"I was sin mental letargy and didn't want to acknowledge it".

Meanwhile, I kept doing one thing that I also used to do in my country. I kept taking photos. And that's how this project came about, commissioned, as work, as a profession. And I realized that what I had recently learned in Spain, Berlin, and Argentina fit very well into practice. And I discovered that therapeutic photography works.

I started by becoming aware of my unique self, and this led me to the recognition of my values. With photography I learned to work my emotions and this made me kinder to reality. Colibrí materialized much of this metamorphosis in me and in my career as a photographer. And thanks to that I am closer to who I am, and therefore closer to everyone. Now I feel more aware of what I have to give to life and to people: My photographic work and this message of sorority.

It is named in honor of a small multicolored bird that, in its nature, has a great pollinating effect and, therefore, generates life and beauty. Additionally, in pre-Columbian cosmology, it was distinguished as the messenger bird and spiritual guide of warriors. The god Tezcatlipoca, for example, in Aztec culture, was represented as a hummingbird that guided the inhabitants of Aztlán to found what we now know as the great city of Mexico.

In a metaphorical sense this legend teaches what a small being can accomplish in spite of its
conditions.
